Sialkot International Airport

Sialkot International Airport (IATA: SKT, ICAO: OPST) (colloquially known as Sialkot Airport) is situated 14 km (8.7 mi) west of Sialkot in the Sialkot District of Pakistan. It has the distinctions of being the first privately-owned public airport in Pakistan and South Asia and of having the longest runway in Pakistan.
Approximately 1,000,000 travellers from Sialkot and adjacent areas are expected to benefit from this international airport each year.
Recently it has been confirmed that the airport will be developed further, the apron will be extended to accommodate 12 aircraft and jet bridges will be installed.

History
The export-oriented industrial city of Sialkot had long felt the need for an international passenger and cargo airport. The nearest one was in Lahore which is about 125 km away. The federal government promised the industrialists of Sialkot an international airport. Due to bureaucratic red-tape, indifference by the government and, more importantly, its proximity to Indian-administered Kashmir and periodic shelling from across the border, no work could be started.
Tired of foot-dragging, Sialkot's industrialists in the late 1980s agreed to build the airport themselves and sought the federal government's approval. On February 2, 2001, approval was granted after a decade of negotiations with the federal government, and construction of an international airport at Sialkot for passenger and cargo traffic began. A team of directors was approved, under the chairmanship of Mian Mansha (three times chairman for SIAL), all of whom placed personal wealth into the project as a primary investment. Each director on the board had previous experience running sizable and successful enterprises — they were selected due to this knowledge. Also, with Rs 5 million of personal investment in the project by each one of them, the directors had a direct stake in its profitability. As the development of SIAL went on, the number of directors had reached 250 and it was decided to close membership to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors at SIAL inspired confidence that the potential of the airport project will be fully realized. On February 26, 2001, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority with the approval of Ministry of Defence for the construction of an international airport in Sialkot.
On March 24, 2005, Sialkot International Airport Limited (SIAL) was formed under the auspices of the chamber. On March 26, 2005, the first plane landed on the newly constructed runway, which has been built to handle a fully loaded Boeing 747, as plans involve dealing with heavy aircraft for cargo imports and exports. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) test flight PK-613 landed at the Sialkot International Airport on October 20, 2007.
A memorandum of understanding between PIA and Sialkot International Airport Authority for mutual cooperation and joint promotion of Sialkot International Airport was signed by Anwaar Rasul Khan, senior vice president (Sales), PIA, and Mian Naeem Javed, director, Sialkot International Airport.
The first and the largest international airport constructed by the private sector in Pakistan, at a cost of over Rs 2.6 billion, became operational on November 30, 2007. The former military ruler of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf formally inaugurated the Sialkot International Airport on December 11, 2007.
As of today, Sialkot has the longest runway (3600 m) of all airports in Pakistan; this will change when the new New Islamabad International Airport becomes operational.

Sialkot Fort

Sialkot Fort is one of the oldest forts in Pakistan. The city of Sialkot, which is one of the oldest cities of Pakistan, has historical significance due to the Fort. Historian Diayas Jee has stated that Raja Sálbán re-established Sialkot city around the 2nd century CE. and ruled over the area between the rivers Ravi and Chenab. Sálbán built the Sialkot Fort in two years (which, at the time, had double walls) for the defense of the city. Raja Sálbán, supposedly, used more than 10,000 laborers and masons for the repair and extension of the Fort with stone slabs and rocks which were brought to the location from Pathankot.
From 1179 to 1186, Shahab ud-Din Ghori ruled Lahore and Sindh. With the help of the Raja of Jammu, he captured the Sialkot Fort. The Sialkot Fort was given to the Janjua tribes by Sultan Firuz Shah Tughluq who accepted their suzerainty in that region around late 14th century CE.
Rashid Niaz, another historian who has authored Tareekh-i-Sialkot, has written that the second wall of the ancient Sialkot Fort was discovered by the Sialkot Municipal Corporation in 1923 while carrying out civil works in the city. At that time, archaeology experts from Taxila and Delhi visited Sialkot and confirmed that the stone wall (faseel) was 5,000 years old. Later, that wall was re-buried.
At present, few ruins, including a bastion, are all that is left of the Fort. Among the many ills plaguing it is the growing number of encroachments which are a blot on its face. The offices of the district government are located on the premises of the Fort

Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal

Sir Muhammad Iqbal (Urdu: محمد اقبال) (November 9, 1877 – April 21, 1938), also known as Allama Iqbal (Urdu: علامہ اقبال), was a philosopher, poet and politician in British India who is widely regarded as having inspired the Pakistan Movement. He is considered one of the most important figures in Urdu literature, with literary work in both the Urdu and Persian languages.Iqbal is admired as a prominent classical poet by Pakistani, Indian and other international scholars of literature. Though Iqbal is best known as an eminent poet, he is also a highly acclaimed "Muslim philosophical thinker of modern times". His first poetry book, Asrar-e-Khudi, appeared in the Persian language in 1915, and other books of poetry include Rumuz-i-Bekhudi, Payam-i-Mashriq and Zabur-i-Ajam. Amongst these his best known Urdu works are Bang-i-Dara, Bal-i-Jibril, Zarb-i Kalim and a part of Armughan-e-Hijaz. Along with his Urdu and Persian poetry, his various Urdu and English lectures and letters have been very influential in cultural, social, religious and political disputes over the years. In 1922, he was knighted by King George V, giving him the title "Sir".While studying law and philosophy in England, Iqbal became a member of the London branch of the All India Muslim League. Later, in one of his most famous speeches, Iqbal pushed for the creation of a Muslim state in Northwest India. This took place in his presidential speech in the League's December 1930 session. He was very close to Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.Iqbal is known as Shair-e-Mushriq (Urdu: شاعر مشرق) meaning Poet of the East. He is also called Muffakir-e-Pakistan ("The Inceptor of Pakistan") and Hakeem-ul-Ummat ("The Sage of the Ummah"). In Iran and Afghanistan he is famous as Iqbāl-e Lāhorī (اقبال لاهوری‎ Iqbal of Lahore), and he is most appreciated for his Persian work. Pakistan Government had recognised him as its "national poet". His birthday (یوم ولادت محمد اقبال‎ – Yōm-e Welādat-e Muḥammad Iqbāl) is a Public holiday in Pakistan.

The Sialkot Clock Tower is situated in Saddar Bazar, Sialkot, Pakistan. It acts like a giant pin, holding the crazy and bustling streets of the main city and the well--planned, relatively tranquil portions of the cantonment area together. Standing tall for more than a century, the tower would have been witness to many a time of upheaval and change. Sheikh Ghulam Qadir and Seth Rai Bahadur laid its foundation stone . In the company of its four clock faces that still keep track of the passing minutes. It has been renovated many a times but the original structure is not changed. Govt. Murray College Sialkot

Government Murray College Sialkot was established as Scotch Mission College by Scottish missionaries belonging to the Church of Scotland Mission in 1889. The Church of Scotland came to Sialkot (then Part of British India) in January 1857 when the first Scottish missionary, Reverend Thomas Hunter, came to live with his wife, Jane Scott, and baby son near the Brigade Parade Ground, facing the Trinity Church (whose first stone was laid on March 1, 1852). The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Madras on January 30, 1857. Sialkot at that time was in the diocese of Calcutta in British India. Thomas Hunter, his wife and baby son were murdered in Sialkot during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
The Scottish missionaries who established Scotch Mission College were born and lived in the comparative comfort of Scotland, deeply moral and ordained to the Christian ministry, each one of them educated in one of the five ancient universities of their country. They worked largely without recompense to educate people of a town very different from theirs. In 1972, the government of Pakistan dismissed the Scottish missionaries and nationalized the institution.
